With an apartment at Troiaresort I’d not only benefit from any capital gains but I’d also benefit from the pleasure of owning in Portugal and being able to holiday there.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Troiaresort is located on the Tróia peninsula, on Portugal’s Blue Coast, which is surrounded by white, sandy beaches and is 500-metres wide at the widest point, so “it is a great place for water sports” says Neil.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“I considered a couple of other developments on the Silver Coast but the range of water activities was one of the main reasons I decided on Troiaresort. The beaches are perfect to launch sailing boats from, as others tend to be too steep, and the wind is great for kite surfing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Another great thing about Troiaresort is its diversity. There are great beach bars and I enjoying playing the odd round of golf. There is also the benefit of being only 45 minutes from Lisbon and the number of nice, historical towns nearby to visit, such as Evora.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Troiaresort encompasses a Robert Trent Jones Senior 18-hole golf course, which has just reopened after a six-month overhaul. Neil would like to “play a bit more golf”, and hopes to do this once his apartment is completed, expected for October 2008.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265849058663547090" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 213px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YC4op89B4LE/SRQN0bZ3QNI/AAAAAAAAAFo/DOAnDTT-A0A/s320/golfinhos.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Neil bought a one- bedroom, 117 sq m corner beach apartment, with “two balconies that both overlook the beach, so it means by apartment will not be looked into at all. They will also provide views over the fantastic beach and water beyond.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Troiaresort is currently under construction, but once complete it will also include two five-star hotels, two apart-hotels, a 184-berth marina, a casino, a conference centre, a beach club, a country club, a tennis centre and an equestrian centre plus swimming pools, restaurants and shops.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Neil says “The airport at Lisbon being only 45 minutes away from Troiaresort is such an advantage. I often take hand-baggage and get to the airport half an hour before the flight. It takes about two and a half hours to fly from London to Lisbon, so I’m at Tróia in no time.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Neil expects to use his property throughout the year, for about two to three months in total, and only plans to rent it out to family and friends. Neil says, “My parents will use the apartment and I know my brother is keen to get out here. I expect the rest of my friends will also enjoy it there, someone always seems to be heading to Portugal so I know the apartment will never be empty for long.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Neil says “It will be great to have it in time for the summer sun. Although I hope to use it year-round, and I was there for a weekend in January and the weather was lovely. My friends and I went to Comporta Café (a beachside restaurant on the Tróia peninsular) and had a great time. It has natural surroundings with white, sandy beaches. Since it is in a type of harbour, the inner area is sheltered so you can do loads of water sports.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“I’ve been taking my kids to Tróia for many years and we have often seen dolphins in the harbour and enjoyed swimming at the beaches.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;John bought a beach villa plot that backs on to a small lake. Here he plans to build a three-bedroom villa plus study with a private garden and swimming pool.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“I bought the house partly as an investment, but mainly as a treat for me and my family. I still own the house in Cascais and plan to rent this out, so the Troiaresort property will be for holidays and fun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“We will also be to take the boat across to Setubal, the town opposite the peninsula, where they have a local speciality of choco frito – cuttlefish fritters, which are a bit like a large squid. They deep fry them like we’d do fish and chips and it tastes incredible.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“You’re never bored in Portugal – there are loads of things to do. You can go walking in the natural parks or just laze around and have some good wine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“There are some fantastic wineries nearby where they produce some amazing wines, including my favourite, Quinta Bacalhoa, which you can buy for about €15 a bottle and it’s unbelievable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“The kids also like to walk on the beach and pick up millions of shells – they are scattered all over the sand. Our bathroom is filled with them!”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“It’s also very easy to get to, with direct flights from Manchester airport, which is close to us. You can fly either to Lisbon or Faro – it’s about an hour from Lisbon airport and two from Faro – so there are some good options to get there.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having lived in Portugal for almost eight years, John knows the local property market well. “Portugal never had a boom so it’s not likely to have a correction, unlike other markets such as Spain and Ireland.
